Dr. Nachimuthu Mahalingam, our Chairman, is the visionary who has led us to the pinnacle of the sugar industry while harnessing our synergies for the betterment of the communities that support us.
Born to Sri P. Nachimuthu Gounder and Smt. Rukmani Ammal on 21 March 1923, Dr. Mahalingam’s family had been agriculturists over the generations. It was NM, as he is fondly known, whose vision took the family business by leaps and bounds into the modern harmonious, sustainable and self-sufficient company that it is today. Though it was no cake walk, he surpassed his hurdles with remarkable composure and his subsequent achievements are lined up for all to see.
His excellence as an industrialist, political and social activist, educationalist and philanthropist are dedicated to his strong spiritual faith. A celebrated Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow, he believes his strength comes from his devotion to Jothi and Ramalinga Vallalar.
With an incredible 15 years as an MLA in Tamil Nadu Assembly to his credit, he has been instrumental in the state’s development as the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission. He has also published many an academic treatise on religion, philosophy, ancient civilizations and literature. Leading the life of a Gandhian, others who have influenced him include Jawaharalal Nehru and C. Rajagopalachari.
His commitment to social reform has seen him in many responsible positions. He has been instrumental in the implementation of the Parambikulam-Aliyar Irrigation Project and the establishment of the Institute of Asian Studies at Madras in 1981. He has also been the Honorary Consul to the Government of Mauritius during1989-90.
In recognition of his charitable social endeavours His Holiness Sri Sankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakodi Peedam bestowed on him the title “Aram Valarkkum Annal” in 1983 and ’Muththamiz Seva Rathinam’ in 2003. In addition to being an Indira Gandhi National Integration awardee, he has also been conferred doctorates by Bharathiar University, Anna University and Tamilnadu Agricultural University. He is also a fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India).
